My name is Belle Viciedo, I am High School student at St Andrews School and have been enrolled in Creative Heart Dance Studio for the last 12 years in Boca Raton, Florida. For as long as I can remember, I have had one great passion, and that has been dance.

After more than a decade of experience with a dance studio and a competitive dance team, I asked my parents, friends and instructors what happens to our incredible costumes that we wear for only a few minutes for the recitals and competitions after our performances. And everyone seemed to answer the same, “we must get rid of them” or “throw them out.” This bothered me, because I found this so wasteful, especially when I knew there were dancers that did not have the means to wear these costumes for their performances. In that moment I thought, wouldn’t it be great if someone organized getting these gently worn costumes to other youths that really needed them but may not be able to afford them? That’s how “Belle of the Ball” got started. I wanted every dancer to feel like the “Belle of the Ball” when they put on a beautiful costume for their recitals and performances.

I initially contacted the Boys and Girls Club of the Palm Beaches and the Talented Teen Club, which helps build self-esteem in teens. They were thrilled for the opportunity to receive costumes because they could incorporate them in their shows, activities, and performances. In my first initiative, I was able to secure more than 300 gently used costumes and donate them to these two great organizations!

During that first initiative, I learned that I had developed a new passion that was greater than my passion in dance. The passion in giving that provided me with such incredible joy! I had never experienced this unique type of joy before, the joy derived by giving to others. This joy compelled me to think of what else I may be able to do to give at a greater level. I spoke to my parents about my vision of helping across the country and began to develop the “Belle of the Ball” Ambassador Program.
